An ABC investigation has uncovered the case of an 81-yea2r-old woman, who was bullied and intimidated by Suncorp’s debt collector ARMA Group over a debt she didn’t owe.

Diane Walker started receiving debt collection notices after a minor car accident in which she was not at fault. The other driver’s insurer AAMI, part of the Suncorp Group, contacted her to cover costs.

But when Ms Walker pushed back, asking for evidence,which Suncorp didn’t have, It engaged ARMA Group.

Next came a number of legal threats.

ARMA Group is one of Australia’s largest debt collectors, supporting more than 1,000 businesses to recover money.

It uses automatic processes and its website recently said it takes “less than two minutes to set up a smart payment plan and no manual intervention is required.”

Diane Walker’s son, Scott stepped in to help. He’s previously worked as freelance camera operator for the ABC.

ARMA Group didn’t respond to repeated questions from the ABC. Further contact was made with its executives, who also didn’t comment.

The consumer watchdog is taking action against ARMA Group in the Federal Court. The ACCC is alleging it and Force Legal, which are both owned by Credit Clear Limited, sent 320,000 debt enforcement notices to individuals that were misleading.

Former ACCC chair Allan Fels says it’s “Robodebt 2.0 of the worst form….this seems to be the worst kind of illegal, deceptive conduct, applied to bully, intimidate and frighten.”

Diane Walker case is now resolved. Suncorp apologised and compensated her with a $1,500 goodwill fee.

It also told her that ARMA had acknowledged the matter was not handled appropriately.
