People against and in favour of the United States’ military intervention in Venezuela to capture President Nicolas Maduro gathered on Monday, January 5, in front of the New York City courthouse where Maduro was set to appear.
Footage filmed by Brendan Gutenschwager captured a mix of demonstrators outside the courthouse holding signs with messages urging the release of Maduro and Venezuelan first lady Cilia Flores, pro-Trump messages, Venezuelan flags, and anti-war signs including “US out of the Caribbean,” among others. One man was seen holding up a T-shirt printed with the word “captured” and a photo of Maduro, blindfolded and in handcuffs, released by US authorities. Chants of “Thank you, Trump,” “Free Maduro,” and “USA” were heard.
Maduro and his wife both appeared and each pleaded not guilty to all charges, which included narco-terrorism, cocaine importation conspiracy, and possession of machine guns and destructive devices.
