Dramatic footage captured the moment orcas attacked a tourist sailboat off the coast of Portugal on Saturday, September 13, before repeatedly ramming a second boat nearby and causing it to sink.

The video, captured by a security camera on the boat and provided by crew member Lisa Strand Festervoll, shows steering wheels spinning out of control as an orca rams the hull of the boat, the Nova Vida.

Further footage captured on a mobile phone shows the crew inspecting damage to the boat.

The incident occurred about 10 nautical miles from Costa da Caparica, which is located south of Lisbon, local reports said.

“We were off Lisbon when just before 12 noon the whole boat shook, and the rudders hit hard and quickly,” Festervoll wrote in an article for Seilmagasinet, a sailing news magazine in Norway. “On the side of the boat, we saw in disbelief a large killer whale that was around six meters long.”

Festervoll said the attack struck their boat’s rudder several times, causing the steering mechanism to fail.

Following advice they had received, the panicked crew tried to deter the orcas by putting the boat in reverse, but found that damage to the rudder was causing the boat to move in circles, according to Festervoll. The crew then followed another tip by pouring vinegar into the water but it had no apparent effect, she said.

“After several intense minutes of hard hits on the rudder, the animals moved on to Oceanview, another boat nearby. It was really ravaged and eventually sank, but fortunately the crew was rescued in good time,” Festervoll wrote. “A third boat was also attacked [and] suffered major damage,” she added.

The final scenes in this video show the Oceanview being attacked by orcas, Festervoll said.

The crew of the Nova Vida was eventually able to install an emergency rudder and sail back to Cascais, accompanied by a vessel from Portugal’s coast guard service, Portuguese media reported.

In a post on Instagram, Festervoll’s group said “the experience is not something that they’d wish on anyone.”

Since 2020, hundreds of incidents of orcas ramming boats have been documented around the Iberian peninsula, sparking several theories and research into the rise of the behavior.
