Shannon Rhook and her daughter Sophie are speaking publicly for the first time about the loss of Bridgette “Biddy” Porter — Sophie’s childhood best friend.
When Shannon saw the breaking news headline late at night, she instantly feared it was Biddy. Knowing Sophie was away and still unaware, she took immediate action, locking her daughter out of social media and making sure she wouldn’t learn the devastating truth from a phone screen, news alert or message.
In this emotional account, Shannon and Sophie reflect on the moment everything changed, the pain of telling a child her best friend is gone, and the lasting heartbreak of growing up without Biddy. They also share memories of the fearless, fun-loving girl they refuse to let be forgotten.
This is a story about protection, grief, friendship and the milestones that continue without the person who should still be here.
The story is also explored in season six of Watching Two Detectives, the podcast hosted by former NSW homicide detectives Peter Hogan and Scott Rogan. Drawing on decades of experience investigating major crimes, Hogan and Rogan examine the brutality of Biddy’s death, the impact on her family, the coronial inquest, and the wider questions raised about child safety, victims’ rights and the forensic mental health system.
