Tech companies accused of ‘choosing’ not to use resources to protect users online
Communications Minister Annika Wells said eSafety’s new transparency report showed in “black and white” that big tech is “not doing enough to protect Australians from harm online”.
Wells said eSafety had asked tech companies what they were doing “to tackle serious issues like sexual extortion and child sexual abuse material” online.
“They have the tools, they have the resources, and yet, they are choosing not to use them with full effect,” Wells said.
She said tech companies were required under “Australian law to protect Australians online from illegal materials, or face fines of up to $54.6 million”.
