Sydney’s electric ferry fleet to launch in 2028 | 7NEWS

Sydney’s ferry fleet is transitioning from diesel to battery-operated electric vessels, with the first Australian-made electric ferry modelled on the Parramatta River-class design. Hobart-based shipyard Richardson Devine Marine will build the vessel for 12-month trials beginning in early 2028, servicing the new Sydney Fish Market at Blackwattle Bay. The first electric ferry is expected to enter full passenger service in 2029, with plans for broader fleet electrification pending the trial’s outcome.
