Swatch shoppers around the world go mad for plastic pocket watches
Worldwide chaos has erupted over the highly anticipated Audemars Piguet x Swatch “Royal Pop Collection” watch collaboration, forcing global retail store closures amid extraordinary demand.
In major cities across the US and Europe, massive crowds and lengthy queues grew completely out of control. In the US, eager buyers camped out for up to four days in camping chairs and warm clothing just to secure a spot in line. However, the frantic launches quickly turned volatile. Scenes from various American shopping malls saw shoppers making mad dashes up escalators, while separate scuffles with local authorities resulted in police deploying pepper spray on crowds that included children. Ultimately, at least nineteen retail locations across the US were forced to shut down to ensure public safety.
Similar frenzies unfolded across Europe. In France, hundreds of people allegedly forced open shopping mall doors early in the morning, prompting police to use tear gas to disperse the crowd. Meanwhile, in Paris, hundreds of enthusiasts camped overnight along the Champs Elysees. Despite strict rules requiring identity checks, numbered tickets, and a limit of one timepiece per person, multiple buyers managed to leave with several bags. Outside the stores, many admitted their sole intention was to immediately resell the high-demand pocket watches for three to four times the retail price. In Italy, things also turned violent when a fight broke out between shoppers and store security personnel, leading the company to warn that any queues exceeding fifty people would be paused.
The watch company has reminded frustrated buyers that the bioceramic collection is not a limited edition and will remain available for several months, urging customers not to rush to retail locations in dangerous numbers.
