Maritime security expert Jennifer Parker explains that Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps forces have been targeting civilian merchant vessels, creating a safety crisis that has undermined mariners’ confidence in transiting the strait. An international coalition may be needed to protect shipping, though restoring normal traffic of 130 ships daily could take weeks or months once security is re-established.
