Steve Irwin’s death 20 years on still gives us ‘a real sense of national pride’

“He was such a huge star in the US; we’d kind of almost forgotten about him,” Mr Hildebrand said.

“When he died, and there was that huge global outpouring … we actually produced something extraordinary in this guy.

“That gave us a real sense of national pride and ownership over Steve Irwin.”
