A drifting SpaceX rocket component is feared to have collided with the moon at nearly 9,000 kilometres per hour after solar activity and gravity forces altered its trajectory. The unintentional impact, which occurred following a January 2025 SpaceX mission that sent two robotic landers to the moon, is being analysed by scientists and NASA for insights into the lunar surface composition.
The incident highlights growing concerns about space junk, with over 130 million pieces currently orbiting Earth, while potentially providing valuable data for NASA’s Artemis programme, which aims to land astronauts on the moon within two years and establish a permanent base camp.
