Sir Patrick Stewart, the acclaimed stage and screen actor best known for Star Trek: The Next Generation and X-Men, has died aged 86 after Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. His death marks the end of a remarkable career spanning more than six decades across theatre, television and film.
Stewart’s final video message before his death was especially moving, as he spoke about love and reflected on Shakespeare’s sonnets — a fitting tribute to the art that shaped his life. His career began on stage, where he built his reputation with the Royal Shakespeare Company and performed in numerous Shakespeare productions.
By the 1970s, Patrick Stewart had become a familiar face on television and in film, appearing in I, Claudius, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Excalibur, Lifeforce and Dune. But it was his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation that made him a global icon. The hit series ran from 1987 to 1994, leading to four feature films and the sequel series Star Trek: Picard from 2020 to 2023.
Beyond Star Trek, Stewart became equally beloved by Marvel fans for playing Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise, a role he portrayed eight times. His final screen role is reported to be in Marvel’s 2026 film Avengers: Doomsday, alongside longtime friend and collaborator Sir Ian McKellen.
Known for his dramatic gravitas, Stewart also showed a brilliant comedic side in The Simpsons, American Dad, Frasier, Blunt Talk and Extras. Off screen, he was a passionate advocate for animal rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and support for women and domestic violence survivors. Knighted in 2010 for services to drama, Sir Patrick Stewart leaves behind an extraordinary artistic and humanitarian legacy.
