Sex crime trials begin for former bishop | 7NEWS
Former Bishop of Broome, 76-year-old Christopher Saunders, has pleaded not guilty as his 15-day trial begins for 26 sex-crime charges spanning 11 years. Prosecutors allege Saunders targeted young Aboriginal males and used church funds to host alcohol-fueled parties at his residence. At these parties, shirtlessness, boxing, and wrestling were encouraged as pretexts for touch that allegedly escalated into sexual abuse.
Saunders is the highest-ranking Catholic Church official in Australia to stand trial on sex charges since Cardinal George Pell.
