Kenyan runner Sebastian Sawe made history at the 46th London Marathon, becoming the first person to officially break the two-hour barrier in a competitive marathon, finishing in 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 30 seconds. Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa won the women’s race with back-to-back victories, breaking her own record by nine seconds. The milestone achievement is being compared to Roger Bannister’s first four-minute mile in 1954, surpassing Eliud Kipchoge’s 2019 sub-two-hour run which occurred in non-competitive conditions.
