Sam Williamson’s Miraculous Gold: From Couch to Commonwealth Champion | 7NEWS
Sam Williamson wins gold in the men’s 100 metres breaststroke final at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, delivering one of the most emotional victories of the Games. Just 12 months prior, Williamson couldn’t walk and was watching the Australian swimming trials from his couch. Defying the odds, he surged past world champion, Olympic champion, and world record holder Adam Peaty in a thrilling finish, clocking 59.17 seconds. His girlfriend Lynn, working poolside as a photographer, watched tearfully as Sam claimed the title. In a heartfelt post-race interview, Williamson reflected on the hardships of the past year, crediting his determination and the support of his family and partner. Philip Nowacki of Jersey earned silver in 59.34 — the first ever swimming medal for Jersey at the Commonwealth Games. The moment was widely celebrated as one of the most inspiring stories of the entire Games.
