Russia launched ‘heaviest’ strikes on Ukraine, ending US-brokered winter truce
Russia has launched its “heaviest” attack on Ukraine this year, killing at least two people and leaving tens of thousands without heating amid freezing conditions, on the eve of scheduled peace talks between the warring countries in Abu Dhabi.
This latest attack, involving approximately 71 ballistic missiles and 450 drones, hit several Ukrainian cities and battered energy infrastructure in the middle of a freezing winter, with temperatures of around minus 20C.
The strike appears to mark an end to a seven-day winter truce under which both countries agreed not to attack each other’s energy facilities during ongoing “diplomatic efforts and the cold winter period”.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he expects a response from the US, adding the attack “says a lot about everything else Russia promises or may promise”.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters US President Donald Trump was “unfortunately unsurprised” by Russia’s latest attack.
