Rescue teams are searching for survivors as authorities warn people remain trapped in buildings after a deadly magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of eastern Indonesia.

At least 47 people are dead after the earthquake hit just before 5am local time on Saturday near Flores island, damaging houses and buildings including hospitals, clinics and places of worship, local authorities said.

A second strong quake was recorded thousands of kilometres away on Sumatra island in the west of the archipelago nearly 16 hours later, but there were no initial reports of damage or casualties there.

Local officials told the ABC they were providing temporary shelters for people affected by the earthquake and were urging them to avoid damaged buildings.
