A new dementia drug called Casunla (Donanumab) has shown remarkable results in its first Australian trial patient. 77-year-old Ruth Talbot from the Gold Coast, diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in early 2024, has experienced significant improvement after six months of treatment, with brain scans showing the drug has reduced plaques that build up on Alzheimer’s patients’ brains. The drug is strictly controlled due to potential serious side effects including brain bleeds and swelling, and costs thousands per month after its PBS listing application was rejected in 2024.
