Race against time: Locals attempt to save homes in the Outer Banks
Locals and contractors in Buxton, North Carolina, attempted to save a beachfront home on Thursday, October 30, two days after five homes collapsed in the community.
Fifteen houses have collapsed in the Outer Banks in the past month, Fox reported, including 14 in Buxton alone.
Footage captured by Jenni Koontz/Epic Shutter Photography shows workers strengthening the structure with additional pillars.
“Today additional piling’s were placed under the left side of the house and sister pilings placed around the remaining pilings, during which a rainbow popped out giving a glimmer of hope,” Koontz wrote to Instagram. “A heartwarming story among all the devastation here in Buxton.”
According to Koontz, many of the 15 collapsed homes “fell in front of and around this house causing damage to the pilings. This particular home was a full time residence for a beloved retired couple. To the surprise of many she is still standing despite losing most of the pilings to the left side of the house.”
The decades-old family home, which Koontz says holds sentimental value and memories, is scheduled to be moved to a new lot down the road next week.
