Pressure grows on Albanese government to slash tobacco excise


NSW Labor MLC Stephen Lawrence discusses the NSW parliamentary inquiry into illicit tobacco, which has recommended the cigarette excise be cut to combat the booming black market.

“We recommended an immediate cut to excise back to 2019 levels … about $22 a packet,” Mr Lawrence told News24 host Caleb Bond.

“The soaring federal excise is the cause of the black market.”
