Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has fiercely defended his late mother against criticism by Pauline Hanson, who has been called on to apologise for her remarks.
The One Nation leader labelled Mr Albanese’s references to his public housing upbringing as “pathetic” and argued that people, such as Ms Albanese, should not be able to live under such arrangements for decades.
Addressing the resurfaced remarks on Sunday morning, Mr Albanese said he was “stunned” by the attack on his mother, who died in 2002.
“If Pauline Hanson wants to criticise me, then that’s fine, but my mother was way out of Pauline Hanson’s league, way out of it,” he said.
Liberal frontbencher Andrew Hastie criticised Senator Hanson’s comments and said mothers should be left out of politics.
“I think this is a another indicator to the Australian people that she’s not fit to be prime minister,” he told News24.
“I don’t think you should be talking about the late mother of anyone in this game.”
