Penny Wong says international law under pressure amid UN Security Council bid
Penny Wong says that international law is currently “under a great deal of pressure” and that middle power countries like Australia have a key role to play in upholding global peace and security.
The foreign minister has travelled to New York alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for this year’s UN General Assembly.
Australia is campaigning for a non-permanent seat on the council for 2029-30, marking its first stint on the powerful UN body since 2014.
The government says a seat would give Australia a stronger voice on decisions affecting the country and the region.
“We might be distant from New York, but we are not distant from the rest of the world,” Wong said.
“The world does have an effect on what happens in our economy, in our lives.”
