Israel’s aid restrictions have cut food supplies and people are being killed at US-run aid distribution sites as some describe as ‘real life squid games’ as they evade IDF gunfire whilst collecting aid.
Since May, Palestinians in Gaza have been risking their lives to reach aid depots run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a US- and Israeli-backed private agency now distributing critical supplies. More than 1,000 people have reportedly been killed trying to collect food, with hundreds of deaths occurring at GHF sites.
To access aid, people must first hear notices via Facebook about when and where depots will open—then make the dangerous journey, often walking long distances overnight. Queues form early, with people sleeping near the sites to increase their chances.
Entry paths are tightly controlled: people must walk through long corridors between fences and berms, or face gunfire from soldiers or even tanks.
Witnesses report seeing direct fire at civilians who stray slightly out of line. The most vulnerable—women, children, the elderly—rarely succeed in getting aid. Some describe the distribution points as “death distributions,” saying there’s little warning and no safe way to access food.
Aid boxes contain basics like flour, rice, pasta, lentils, oil and salt—yet even after surviving the journey, many leave empty handed. With fuel scarce, people have even resorted to cooking meals using collected cardboard.
