‘Our family has been ripped apart’ says Australian Jewish community after Bondi Beach shooting
Members of the Australian Jewish community are calling on the government to “step up its game” to combat antisemitism, with some saying they’re “shocked”, “extremely afraid” and deserve to feel safe.
At least 16 people are dead, including one of the gunmen, and 42 others are injured in a terrorist attack authorities say was designed to target the Jewish community. Police have said the alleged shooters targeted an event marking Hanukkah, where 1,000 Jewish people were congregated.
As Australians come together to mourn, some members of the Jewish community have praised the widespread support they’ve received, saying “it’s a beautiful thing to see … we need lots of people of all religions to come together and support each other”.
