Oil rig collapses as fears grow of environmental catastrophe

A major offshore disaster has unfolded off the coast of Gabon after the massive Prospector 5 jack-up oil rig collapsed and sank into the Atlantic Ocean near Mayumba. Operated by Borr Drilling, the mobile drilling platform was carrying 115 personnel when it suffered a catastrophic “punch-through event”—a sudden failure where one of the rig’s elevating legs broke through the seabed during preloading, leading to a complete loss of stability. While 110 workers were safely evacuated, an Indian national has been confirmed dead and four others remain missing. The Gabonese navy, accompanied by crisis units and pollution response teams, has launched an urgent search and rescue mission across the Atlantic as oil and gas operators halt operations in the area.
