New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has criticised the federal Labor government over bracket creep, claiming families are being stung by high tax rates, with top earners paying 47 cents in the dollar including the Medicare levy. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is refusing to back down on controversial budget tax changes, vowing to use parliamentary numbers to pass legislation before July that includes grandfathering negative gearing to new homes only and replacing the 50% capital gains tax discount with an inflation-adjusted model with a minimum 30% tax rate. Opposition Leader Angus Taylor has proposed indexing tax brackets to inflation, though this would cost tens of billions annually.
