NSW Premier Chris Minns provides update on Bondi Terror Attack | 7NEWS
Premier Chris Minns said he will be looking to make changes to the state’s firearm laws in the wake of the incident.
Six firearms were located at the site of the shooting, believed to have been legally owned by 50-year-old father Sajid Akram.
“I think it’s time that we have a change to the law in relation to the firearms legislation in New South Wales, but I’m not ready to announce it today,” Minns said.
“We want to make sure that prospective reform and change in New South Wales has a lasting impact.
“It’s not the last time I’ll be mentioning it and you can expect action soon.”
Minns added that any future legislation on gun laws would “make it more difficult to get theese horrifying weapons that have no practical use in out community”.
“If you’re not involved in agriculture, why do you need these massive weapons that put in danger and make life dangerous and difficult,” he said.
The premier is considering recalling state parliament from their end-of-year break in order to have potential changes made to the law.
Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said Akram “met the eligibility” for a recreational hunting licence – also known as an A/B licence.
“He was a member of gun club and was entitled, by nature of the Firearms Act, to have a firearms licence issued,” he said.
