Nepal flash flood wipes out houses and bridges in Gorkha region
Nepal has been struck by another major flash flood, this time along the banks of the Budhi Gandaki River in the Gorkha region. The flood wiped out entire neighbourhoods, bridges and damaged a hydropower station.
At least five people remain missing. The country is on high alert after a catastrophic flood in August that killed more than 1,400 people, followed by another flood and landslides last month.
Nepal is a largely rural nation of 30 million people that has contributed little to the greenhouse gas emissions driving global warming. Its prime minister Balendra Shah says reconstruction could cost billions of dollars.
The nation’s economy is already under pressure, with limited resources to respond to multiple disasters. Authorities say scores of people in the region left their homes ahead of the Gorkha flash flood, with many now left wondering where they will live.
