NASA’s AI tools could be used by Aussie businesses, says space agency’s Jeevan Perera | The Business

Jeevan Perera is the risk manager for the NASA program that could take mankind to Mars. With more than 36 years of service supporting spaceflight programs, like the international space station, his expertise has shaped standards for complex risks, including AI. He is involved in creating an efficient moon landing, for example, using AI. “And so the process that we’ll probably have is about a two to three mile window between where the landers come to where the habitation modules and the crew quarters will be and we can’t have astronauts driving or supervising {within that radius}, at some point we need to turn over all of those capabilities to an automated system, free up those astronauts to do the real purpose of why we’re there,” Jeevan Perera said.

Mr Perera has some advice for Australian businesses. He says although the environments are very different, the underlying AI management challenge is similar. NASA has to understand what it’s trying to achieve, what could prevent it from succeeding, and what risks it is prepared to accept to achieve the mission. Businesses need to do exactly the same thing with AI, he says. “I would say, in a similar fashion, take those baby steps, figure out easy implementation opportunities for AI because using AI takes some experience and if you take a smaller project and infuse it, you can learn where the mistakes can be made and so by picking things that are not … critical business functions and you implement it in other areas that have meaning, I think through that growth and incremental steps you can get to a point where you can get some hugely improved efficiencies in business operations.”
