Melbourne locals turning to extreme measures to keep their homes safe

Bollards, steering wheel locks and Faraday pouches are just some of the devices in demand, as Melbourne residents go to extreme lengths to protect their property from a youth crime wave.
Mason Stones, from Merc Fabrication and Service, says he installs bollards for 15 customers a week as people resort to fortress-like measures.
That’s about 40 bollards going into the ground every seven days, designed to prevent thieves from ramming their way into a property, or to stop them from driving off with stolen cars.
Mr Stones says in Victoria, keeping your car locked in a garage or a driveway is no longer enough. Security cameras no longer work as a deterrent either.
“We started doing bollards about six months ago – we kept having our customers asking for them,” he told news.com.au.
His primary customers are mechanics and car dealerships. He is planning to add two full-time employees to keep up with orders, and while he is still sourcing Australian-made bollards for now, he worries that he might have to start importing them as demand outpaces local manufacturing.
Mr Stones said the crime situation in Melbourne had rapidly deteriorated after the pandemic.
“The problem is all these ram raids that keep happening, all these car thefts – people are sick and tired of it,” he explained.
“I think the trust in Melbourne is just not there any more, about leaving your car unlocked or leaving your car outside.
