Mattel launches first autistic Barbie doll | 7NEWS
Mattel has released its first autistic Barbie doll, developed in collaboration with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network. The doll features sensory-considered clothing, noise-cancelling headphones, poseable arms for stimming, a communication tablet, and design elements like side-gazing eyes and flat shoes that reflect common autistic experiences. Yellow Ladybugs ambassador Sandhya Menon, a behavioural and developmental psychologist, describes the doll as an important conversation starter about representation, sensory needs, and different communication styles rather than defining a single ‘look’ for autism.
