Male primary school teachers in decline

Less than 18 per cent of Australian primary school teachers are male.

The number of male primary school teachers has been steadily declining for decades; in the 1980s they made up 30 per cent of primary teachers but dropped below 20 per cent in 2007 and then to 17.6 per cent in 2025.

Senior Lecturer in Health & Physical Education at the University of Tasmania Dr Vaughan Cruickshank, and Adelaide-based primary school teacher Jake Heading explain why less men are going into primary teaching, and what needs to be done to change this. #teacher #primaryschool #primaryteacher #education #school
