Karl Bushby completes 28-year trek with a hug from his mother

British adventurer Karl Bushby enjoyed an emotional reunion with his mother, Angela, and family as he arrived back home after a 28-year, 50,000-km trek from Chile, crossing four continents on foot.

Bushby, who set off on his journey in 1998, had two golden rules for his journey — avoid all forms of transport to advance and not return until he completed his challenge.

He was met in the centre of Hull by a crowd of cheering people before being reunited with his mother, 36-year-old son Adam and his 12-year-old granddaughter who he had never met.

Speaking after the reunion, Bushby paid tribute to the kindness of the strangers he had met from hotel owners to people he described as the “poorest of the poor”.

“All just wanted to hear stories, wanted to sit and talk” Bushby said.
