‘It’s a genuine problem’: Australia unveils new migrant crackdown

The Albanese government has announced a new crackdown on migration.

We currently have just over 300,000 migrants coming into Australia from overseas. The government wants to reduce this to 225,000 by 2028.

There are three main targets: people who overstay their visas, people who jump between visas to extend their stays indefinitely, and the families of international students. Backpackers will also be subject to new rules.
