Israeli leaders make their last pitch to voters

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged Likud supporters to turn out in force in the final hours of voting , warning that low turnout could pave the way “for a left-wing government backed by Arab parties”.

Netanyahu also accused the Arab Ra’am party of “trying to steal” the election, claiming senior party members were arrested with envelopes full of money.

Police confirmed three people had been arrested overnight on suspicion of trying to buy votes for Ra’am, but did not identify them as senior party figures and did not allege party leadership was involved.

Ra’am leader Mansour Abbas accused Netanyahu of “lying and inciting against Ra’am” with his allegations.

Netanyahu’s main election rival, Gadi Eisenkot, accused him of resorting to fear-mongering in the final hours of the campaign to mobilise voters.

There was a high turn out at the polls for an election, that some have described as the most consequential in the nation’s history.

Final results could take some time in a political system where no single party has ever won a majority.
