Israeli delegation heads to Egypt for Gaza ceasefire talks | ABC NEWS
An Israeli delegation led by Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer is heading to the Egyptian resort town of Sharm El Sheikh for talks on a Gaza ceasefire proposed by US President Donald Trump.
The negotiations mark the first time Hamas and Israel communicate indirectly since the latter attempted to assassinate Hamas leaders in the Qatari capital of Doha.
Hamas representatives have already arrived in Cairo to hold discussions with Qatari and US governments.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking the total release of all remaining hostages, while Hamas officials have agreed to most of Trump’s proposed terms.
However, some sticking points include Palestinian statehood and self-determination and the complete withdrawal of all troops from the enclave.
IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir has reportedly told troops to prepare for a potential return to Gaza ‘whenever needed’.
