Israel dismisses Mamdani threat to arrest Netanyahu NYC confirms it can’t act on ICC warrant
New York City cannot act on an International Criminal Court warrant for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over alleged war crimes, according to the city’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani. Mamdani said the US government, however, did have the power to arrest Netanyahu and called upon it to detain the Israeli PM on behalf of the ICC.
Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, accused Mamdani of choosing “a collaboration with terror” in calling for Netanyahu’s arrest. Danon said Mamdani’s threat had “no legal basis” as the US is not a member of the ICC, later dismissing it as “political theatre” and a distraction from the NYC mayor’s “own failures”.
Israel has denied committing war crimes in Gaza.
