Three women with links to Islamic State fighters have been charged with crimes against humanity, enslavement offences, membership of a terrorist organisation, and being in a declared area after returning to Australia from Syria with nine children. Health Minister Mark Butler defends the government’s handling of their return, stating security agencies have been preparing for over a decade with established rehabilitation and surveillance plans. Liberal Senator Jane Hume criticises the government for allowing their return through a third party, arguing the Passports Act and temporary exclusion orders could have been used to prevent their entry.
