Iranian security chief warns US against new attacks as tensions escalate
Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei has warned the US against renewed military action, saying that while Iran takes diplomacy seriously, “if (US President Donald) Trump and America are not punished, tomorrow other countries will think that they can attack Iran without paying a price”.
Speaking on the Islamic Republic of Iran News Network, Rezaei said Iran’s “most important deterrent is to end this war in a way that ensures no one ever dares to attack” it again, adding that the country is now waiting to hear the US’ “final response” on the conditions Iran has proposed to open the Strait of Hormuz.
Meanwhile, Trump has suggested he could launch fresh military action after the US holds its midterm elections early next week.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also affirmed the possibility of renewed attacks, warning “we can achieve military objectives if we seek to” but added, “if there is a diplomatic solution, we would be open to it”.
This comes as Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei reportedly told top military commanders that “any level or type of threat must be met with an immediate, impactful and geographically unrestricted response.”
The continued war and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz have caused a spike in global energy prices, making the war unpopular among the US public ahead of midterm congressional elections.
