Iran claims it seized US underwater drone in Strait of Hormuz
Iran claims it has seized a US underwater drone in the Strait of Hormuz but the United States is denying the allegation.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard said its navy intercepted the unmanned vessel in a “coordinated and complex operation” involving intelligence monitoring and electronic warfare.
State-linked media identified the drone as a US REMUS 600, though other reports described it as a Mk 18 Mod 2 Kingfish. Tehran claims the craft was carrying out espionage and surveillance in the strategic waterway.
Iran says the drone has now been handed to military specialists to extract data and examine its systems.
US CENTCOM quickly denied the claim, telling Al Jazeera that American forces have “positive control of all of our operational drone assets.”
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most sensitive maritime chokepoints, with Iran repeatedly warning foreign forces against operating in the area.
If confirmed, it would be the second US underwater drone Iran says it has captured this month, after an earlier reported seizure near the entrance to the strait.
