Infantino says FIFA war rules should change
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has said countries that wage war on other nations should not be banned from future tournaments.
“We should actually never ban any country from playing football because of the acts of their political leaders, because somebody needs to keep the ties open,” he said.
Infantino made the remark when asked why Russia is banned from international football but Israel is not, explaining that the countries have “different” situations and that “the Israel-Gaza situation got resolved”.
He said the ban on Russia since 2022 “hasn’t achieved anything” and that he would like to lift the ban, at least at a youth level.
