Around 50,000 humpback whales are migrating along Australia’s east coast during winter months, travelling from Antarctica to warmer northern waters to mate and breed. The annual migration attracts whale watchers who can observe the mammals breaching, tail slapping and performing other behaviours as they hug the coastline. The whale-watching season runs from May to November, with the whales feeding in Antarctic waters before making their journey north, where calves have a better chance of survival before returning south.
