High Court blocks major coal mine expansion
Australia’s highest court has upheld a first-of-its-kind environmental challenge to overturn a major coal mine expansion, after a years-long community campaign in east-central NSW.
A landmark ruling from the Australian High Court means planning authorities must consider the emissions caused by burning Australian coal overseas when approving projects.
The judgment leaves the proposed expansion of a coal mine in the New South Wales Hunter Valley in limbo.
