Hanson says Australia should be ‘one language’ | ABC NEWS

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has declared Australia should be “one language”, suggesting almost a million people living in the country can’t speak English well.

Pressed to describe her vision of monoculturalism, Hanson says that while she doesn’t want to take away other languages, Australia should also be one language, English.

At the National Press Club last week, Hanson spoke out against multiculturalism and said Australia should embrace monoculturalism.

Yesterday, Hanson said the Socceroos team, which includes migrants, is consistent with her vision of monocultural Australia.

Today, the One Nation leader was asked whether, under her vision of monoculturalism, people would be able to speak a different language, practise a different religion or eat different foods.

“We are one nation. We are and it should be one language,” Hanson says.

“We have 872,000 people in this country who cannot speak English or very little of it. How do you expect these people to then understand our political process when they go to vote, how are they voting?

“Because they can’t understand it has to be the English language as well. I’m not saying take it away.”

Hanson also refuses to acknowledge that many aspects of her version of monoculturalism are actually elements of multiculturalism, such as having a single legal system.
