Gold Coast man faces possible death penalty in Syria over alleged murder | ABC NEWS
A young Australian man is facing a possible death sentence in Syria after allegedly killing another Australian in Darkush, in the country’s north.
Patrick Stevenson from the Gold Coast is a young Muslim convert diagnosed with learning disorders, ADHD and suspected autism. He was arrested on New Year’s Eve 2025.
Syrian authorities allege the 20-year-old has confessed to killing 40-year-old Abdullah Glen Burgess, originally from northern NSW, with an AK-47.
Even if convicted, Mr Stevenson could be spared execution if Mr Burgess’s widow, Amatullah Laurie Duniam, grants him forgiveness under Syria’s legal system.
