Germany blames Russia for Leipzig airport drone attack

German officials say they believe Russia was responsible for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport last month.

Germany’s interior minister Alexander Dobrindt says that intelligence findings indicate the operation was carried out by “low-level agents” working on behalf of Russia.

“The attempted attack on 4 August at Leipzig Airport fits the known pattern of Russian hybrid operations in Europe,” Dobrindt said.

In response, Berlin has announced the closure of the Russian consulate in the former capital Bonn as well as a Russian cultural centre in Berlin, which security agencies believe is linked to espionage activities.

The Kremlin has denied involvement in the suspected attack and condemned what it calls “anti-Russian” actions.
