Former NRL player raises concerns about betting companies’ incentives during his gambling addiction
A former rugby league player says senior employees at a gambling company offered him illicit drugs while he was in the grips of a financially crippling gambling addiction.
Luke Bateman, 31, who was losing “tens of thousands of dollars a month” at the peak of his problem gambling, gave evidence about his personal experience at a Senate inquiry into the federal government’s legislation to restrict gambling ads.
Bateman, who played in the NRL for the Canberra Raiders, revealed the depth of his gambling habits and how he overcame his addiction. He’s now advocating for an end to so-called gambling inducements — incentives such as free or discounted alcohol, free credits or other perks designed to encourage gambling or playing gaming machines.
The two-day inquiry is due to hear from medical experts and welfare charities urging Labor to strengthen its proposal, while the gambling industry has argued against tougher measures.
