Five missing villagers have been reached after a week-long search of a flooded mine cave in Long Chaeng district, Xaysomboun province. Flash flooding trapped the group inside the cave on May 20, sealing the entrance completely. A 26-member Thai rescue team, including specialist divers, arrived on May 23 to assist Lao volunteer associations in the grueling operation. Rescue efforts were severely hindered by submerged chambers, unstable rock formations and narrow passages, with some tunnels measuring just 50cm wide. Authorities are continuing their search for the remaining two villagers.
