First Nations culture and foreign policy: Kalani Kaneko speaks with SBS
The foreign minister of the Marshall Islands says his country was suprised by China’s recent ballistic missile test in the South Pacific and has emphasised the need for transparency when it comes to military activity in the region.
SBS Chief Political Correspondent Anna Henderson spoke with Kalani Kaneko at this year’s Garma Festival, where he was one of a number of Pacific Island leaders to attend.
He says Pacific nations’ diplomacy can draw on this year’s festival theme of Bukmak — meaning ‘everyone’ in the Yolŋu language.
“We have to build on Bukmak,” he said.
“How do we emphasise unity, but at the same time, embrace and acknowledge our differences?”
