A Queensland mayor’s “feral” comment about Bundaberg CBD may have caused online backlash, but many residents agree the city doesn’t feel safe as it’s overrun by “screaming” addicts.

Bundaberg Mayor Helen Blackburn announced, “we need to make our CBD feral free” earlier this month when she launched a “Safe Spaces, Thriving Places” campaign to increase law enforcement, cleaning and development in the city centre. Bundaberg has been dealing with anti-social behaviour, empty lots and rough sleepers in recent years.

While some residents took exception to Ms Blackburn’s word choice, there was also support for her plan.

Kerrin Richardson, who runs the bakery Hot Bread Fred in neighbouring Gin Gin, said she had to be cautious when travelling into Bundaberg CBD to run errands.
