Fauci invokes the Fifth Amendment during senate hearing
Former top U.S. infectious disease expert Dr Anthony Fauci declined to answer 111 questions at a Senate hearing and accused Republican Senator Rand Paul of an “unhinged” campaign to see him imprisoned.
In his opening statement, Fauci told the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which Paul chairs, that he would be invoking his Fifth Amendment right.
“The only conclusion I can reach is that the sole reason he is calling me before this Committee is to get me to say something that could vindicate his repeated public pledges that I end up, in his words, ‘behind bars,” Fauci said.
Paul has previously called for Fauci to be indicted and accused him of lying to Congress about whether the National Institutes of Health funded research in Wuhan, China.
Paul said the U.S Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will hold a vote next week on holding Fauci in contempt of court.
